Evertried platforms8/15/2023 They are really just a collection of ‘lessons’ – again, if you can even call them that – and so ‘Beginner Lesson 5’ of Canadian-French is somehow the 41 st lesson of the course. The courses, if you can call them that, are generally poorly laid-out and not well-designed, and the amount of content varies between the languages. The lowest-level package is aimed at “beginners who want to speak a little ,” and the entire series in any language should allow you to “converse with confidence at a basic level.” I find this very unlikely. So far Language101 has ten languages for you to choose from and these range from standards such as Spanish, Japanese and English to less popular ones such as Danish, and intriguingly, French-Canadian. Most Recommend Resources By Language Chinese You’re learning, look for your language in the table below. Online subscriptions, apps, podcasts and YouTubes for the language In fact, it’s so bad that we’ve never given a review rating as low as the one we gave to Language101.ĭo yourself a favor and use any other language learning resource instead. The fact that you aren’t explicitly taught how to spell, write or translate the language, or any grammar and only learn to parrot phrases out of context means that for me Language101 is best avoided. While I think beginners would learn some words and phrases just by using the platform I don’t think this is a very effective way of learning a language and so wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I found it to be a quite bizarre experience, being repeatedly told that I wasn’t hitting the ‘optimal learning’ of 7 seconds per phrase target. I fail to see how a beginner, who has never learned the language before, is expected to be able to immediately produce words and phrases in a language they don’t know. The ‘learning method’ that is used also seems to me to be pretty inefficient as you are asked to work through the content at breakneck speed. A one-time payment for access to all of its languages costs $727 or $97/month if you opt for the monthly installments option (that would end up working out at $1,164 if you chose the latter!!).įor ‘1 Package’ of the language of your choice it is then $227 for lifetime access or $527 if you want all 3 packages in a given language.Īlternatives: Literally anything else on the Internet (or in a bookstore) would be better!īefore trying out Language101 for myself, I, unfortunately, confused it in my mind with the LanguagePod101 courses made by Innovate Languages ( FrenchPod101, ChineseClass101, etc) which I like and think are quite good.Īs such I ended up being quite disappointed as there really is no comparison between the two as I found Language101’s ‘courses’ (if you can even call them that) to be very poorly thought out and that they don’t teach you all that much.Īlthough the Spanish 1 Package is “for beginners,” the fact that there are no explanations means that you just have to memorize and parrot random words and phrases that are flung at you out of context. Language101 has lots of different subscription plans for you to choose from. It is insulting how much money they are charging for a product this terrible. The ‘courses’ are a muddled mess, I didn’t see any logical progression, and there is only one exercise for you to do ad infinitum until you lose your mind.I don’t agree with their ‘teaching’ method which basically asks you to produce words and phrases in a language you have never learned before as quickly as possible.Despite coming away thinking this is a terrible product (and it is), I liked being asked to produce words and phrases. They provide you with a literal translation of the phrase you are asked to produce.
